Perhaps you still remember Marina Dwyn. We have been sponsoring this sea turtle for some time now through a partnership with SPOT – the Society for the Protection of Turtles in Cyprus.
And now Marina Dwyn has company: We are now supporting a second sea turtle, Aurelia. 🐢
For us, this is a wonderful occasion to tell you once again about this part of our commitment.
Why we support SPOT
SPOT and the organization's work hold a special significance for us. We had the opportunity to get to know SPOT firsthand in Cyprus and gain an impression of their work.
The Marine Turtle Conservation Project has been in existence since 1992 and combines practical conservation with long-term scientific research. SPOT collaborates, among others, with the Marine Turtle Research Group at the University of Exeter.
During the nesting season, beaches are monitored and nests are protected. The team collects data on the turtles and their habitats and works to reduce threats to the animals. This includes collaboration with local fishermen, as accidental bycatch is one of the threats to sea turtles in the Mediterranean. Additionally, there is educational and awareness work as well as research projects.
What originally began with the protection of sea turtles has now grown significantly: SPOT is now also involved with other endangered species and habitats, researching, for example, monk seals, sharks and rays, dolphins and whales, fisheries, and marine pollution.
From one sponsorship to two
Our first sponsored turtle, Marina Dwyn, will of course remain with us. Now, Aurelia has joined her.
We can't tell you much more about Aurelia at the moment – and we don't want to preempt anything or fill it with general information.
During the season, we will receive further information and news about our sponsorships from SPOT. As soon as we receive it, we will, of course, share it with you.
With these sponsorships, we don't just support "our" two turtles. The proceeds from the sponsorship program go towards SPOT's conservation work during the nesting season – for example, monitoring beaches, protecting nests and hatchlings, as well as rescue, rehabilitation, and educational work.
Why is this part of Biowaves?
For us, sustainability means not only thinking about materials, packaging, and the lifespan of our products.
We are a small company and, of course, cannot make a difference everywhere. That's why we prefer to specifically support projects whose work we believe in.
SPOT is one of them for us.
And that's why we are very happy that one sponsorship has now turned into two sponsorships.
