Our Turtle Marina Dwyn – Biowaves Supports the Protection of Green Sea Turtles in Cyprus

Sea turtles are fascinating and ancient creatures, but unfortunately they are now critically endangered. To make a modest yet effective contribution to the conservation of these unique animals, Biowaves is now supporting the organization SPOT (Society for the Protection of Turtles) by adopting a turtle.

Our sponsored turtle is named Marina Dwyn and represents all the animals that live and struggle to survive in the waters off Cyprus. We don’t have any photos of Marina Dwyn yet, but we’ll share them with you as soon as possible.

Who is SPOT?

SPOT is a nonprofit organization that has been working to protect sea turtles in Cyprus and the surrounding area since 1985. It focuses primarily on two endangered species:

  • the loggerhead sea turtle ( Caretta caretta )
  • and the green sea turtle ( Chelonia mydas ).

What SPOT actually does:

  • Protection and monitoring of nesting beaches, particularly in northern Cyprus (e.g., Alagadi Beach)
  • Marking and securing nests to ensure they are neither destroyed nor disturbed
  • Monitoring newly hatched chicks
  • Raise awareness about the dangers of tourism, light pollution, and marine debris
  • Collaboration with volunteers, researchers, and local authorities

Why do green sea turtles need help?

According to the IUCN, the green sea turtle is critically endangered. Only a few thousand females return to lay their eggs on Mediterranean beaches each year.

Chypre is a particularly important nesting site, one of several in the eastern Mediterranean. Between May and August, the females dig their nests in the warm sand. About two months later, the chicks hatch, if they survive.

The threats are varied:

  • Plastic waste that is often mistaken for food
  • Light pollution that prevents newly hatched turtles from reaching the sea
  • Loss of habitat due to development and mass tourism
  • Incidental catches in fishing

Who is Marina Dwyn?

Our adopted turtle, Marina Dwyn, is a green sea turtle, a symbol of Cyprus’s endangered population. Her name roughly translates to “sea creature that brings life.”

By adopting her, we are helping SPOT protect the nests, guide the young turtles on their journey to the ocean, and create better long-term living conditions for these impressive animals. Photos and updates on Marina Dwyn will follow as soon as they are available.

What we can learn from this

Protecting the oceans starts with all of us: using less plastic, consuming mindfully, and supporting organizations like SPOT—all of these things make a difference.

We can’t wait to share more information about Marina Dwyn with you. In the meantime, we hope her story will inspire you to rethink your consumption habits and join forces to protect the oceans.
